How to Format Your CSV File for Importing Contacts and Opportunities

Before you import contacts or opportunities into Jumpalead, it’s important to format your CSV file correctly. A clean file will save you time, reduce errors, and ensure your data flows smoothly into your CRM.

Why Preparing Your CSV Matters

  • Reduces the chance of errors or failed imports
  • Makes it easier for Jumpalead to automatically map your fields
  • Helps with accurate updates and duplicate detection
  • Supports custom fields and segmentation
  • Saves time by avoiding cleanup after import

What is a CSV File?

CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values. It’s a simple format used to store data in rows and columns, similar to a spreadsheet.

  • CSV files end with the extension .csv
  • You can create or edit them in Excel, Google Sheets, or even a text editor
  • Only one sheet per file is supported

Structuring Your File

Make sure the column headers in your CSV match the fields in Jumpalead. Each row is a single record, and each column is a property.

Mandatory Fields

At least one of these is required to create or update a contact:

  • First Name
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number

Tip: For updating contacts, you need a unique identifier such as Contact ID, Email, or Phone. For opportunities, include the Opportunity ID if updating.

Field Formatting

Follow these rules to avoid issues:

  • Dates: Use formats like MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY/MM/DD, MM-DD-YYYY, or YYYY-MM-DD
  • Multi-select or checkboxes: Separate values with commas, semicolons, or periods (for example: VIP, Lead OR Gold; Silver)
  • Dropdowns: Only one value allowed (for example: Blue)
  • Contact Owner: Use FirstName LastName format (for example: Logan Paul)
  • Tags: Separate with commas, semicolons, or periods
  • Phone numbers: Use international format where possible (for example: +11234567890). US formats like (123) 456-7890 are also accepted. Avoid invalid formats like 1234567
  • Numbers: Use clean numeric values such as 1.23 or 1234
  • Money: Use numeric values and include commas or decimals if needed (for example: 1,234,234.33)
  • Contact Followers: Separate names with commas (for example: Adam Smith, David Lee)
  • Additional Emails: Separate with commas
  • Additional Phone Numbers: Separate with commas

  • Not accepted: USA, AUS, UK

Supported Timezones

If your file includes a timezone field, use the exact supported value.

Examples:

  • Pacific/Auckland
  • Australia/Sydney
  • America/New_York
  • UTC

Tips

  • Clean blank rows and columns before importing
  • Create custom fields in Jumpalead before mapping them in a CSV
  • You can import multiple emails or phone numbers by using separate columns
  • If you include a field in your CSV that does not exist in Jumpalead, it will be ignored unless you map it to an existing field during import
👉 By following these formatting rules, you’ll have a smoother import process and cleaner data in Jumpalead.
